:30Remastered and accompanied by an entire disc of unreleased tracks from his legendary vault, Purple Rain Deluxe allowed the world to experience the best-selling album of Prince's career in an entirely new way.
Work on the reissue of Purple Rain began in 2014, around the 30th anniversary of the iconic album, and was overseen by Prince himself during remastering sessions at Paisley Park in 2015. The album was released in June 2017, 33 years after it first skyrocketed to the top of the sales and radio charts, accompanied by extensive liner notes from Prince's iconic band, the Revolution.
A fabulously crisp mix of one of modern pop's greatest LPs.”
Will Hermes, Rolling Stone, 2017
In addition to the nine remastered tracks from the original album, Purple Rain Deluxe contained 11 previously unreleased recordings, including Prince's version of the single "The Dance Electric," which he had given to his childhood friend and first bandmate André Cymone for his 1985 album; songs that were staples of Prince and the Revolution's live set during the Purple Rain Tour like "Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden"; and songs that were featured in the film but not included on the original soundtrack like "Father's Song."
Purple Rain Deluxe also included a CD of single edits and B-Sides that were released in the Purple Rain era, plus a DVD of Prince and the Revolution performing live at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York, on March 30, 1985, when the Purple Rain Tour was at its peak.
The reissued and remastered album clearly resonated deeply with music fans around the world; within weeks of its release, the album climbed into the top 10 on album sales charts across the globe, reaching number 1 on four separate Billboard charts: R&B Albums, Vinyl Albums, Tastemakers Albums, and Movie Soundtracks.
Prince’s screams in 'Baby I’m a Star' take shape in three dimensions, and the interlaced guitar lines in 'Darling Nikki' sound as if they're radiating their own humidity.”
Brad Nelson, Pitchfork, 2017
